Cell Phone Use and Sperm Counts

A growing body of evidence suggests the electromagnetic waves from cell phones may be associated with abnormal sperm function.  In particular, a new study from the Cleveland Clinic (Agarwal et al., 2008) used obervational data to look at 361 men attending their infertility clinic.  These men were divided into groups by hours of cell phone use each day (reported by the men themselves) as follows: none,  < 2 hr/day, 2-4 hr/day and > 4 hr/day.

They then looked at sperm motility, count, and morphology (shapes).  What they found was that the percent normal morphology or shape of sperm was significantly LOWER for all cell phone using groups, as compared to men who had no use.  Sperm counts and percent motility (those that swim) were significantly worse for men using the cell phone 2 or more hours a day, and grew increasingly abnormal the longer then time on the phone each day.  The worsening sperm function (abnormal motility and morphology) seen with increasing cell phone use occurred for both men with “normal” sperm counts and those with low sperm counts.

This study echoes several other studies, including one byDavoudi et al., that was able to make men with normal sperm parameters, have abnormal motility by being on the phone 6 hrs/ day for 5 days.  Extreme, yes, but a significant effect in 5 days is pretty scary!  And this study didn’t use men with already abnormal sperm function.

At this time, it isn’t clear how other EMW exposures, such as computers or PDAs may impact sperm function.  However, if you are trying to conceive, and especially if you have male factor issues as a couple, choose the land line!
