Millions of couples use personal lubricants to enhance their intimacy every day. However, a substantial number of women, and even some men, experience irritation from these very products that are supposed to decrease burning and discomfort.
This is because most lubricants have formulas that are “hyperosmotic”, a big word for having too many” salt-like” substances (ions) in them. The effect is basically like when you swim in the ocean and your eyes sting, but of course the effect is “down there” where you apply the lubricant!
I am Dr. E, a woman Reproductive Physiologist. I have always had problems with irritation from lubricants. In the past, I thought that the burning I had was from intercourse, not realizing it was the lubricants causing this. And of course, every time I discussed it with a doctor they told me to use more lubricant.
I developed Pre’ Lubricant, an isotonic lubricant (meaning it has the same ion level as your body) to be less irritating. We have been fortunate enough to have Dr. Adriaens (another woman scientist) at Ghent University in Belgium, do a study to compare irritation potential of the three leading lubricants (Astroglide®, KY® & Replens®) versus Pre’.
She found that Pre’ alone caused NO irritation in her model. All three of the leading lubricants caused some irritation and actually caused tissue damage. This work is being published in the medical journal “Sexually Transmitted Diseases,” which is a good journal, but it is not a major publication that many American doctors read.
Dr. Adriaens tried to get her work published in the top US ObGyn journals, but she was told that irritation from lubricants just isn’t really that common or important. Well, we ladies know this isn’t true. However, medical America doesn’t know this, and there has never been a published study, that I could find, documenting the actual occurrence rate of this problem.
So…if you can take the time to fill out this survey, our goal is to get feedback from thousands of women & men across the US, to get some initial data on how common lubricant irritation is, and what brands it most commonly occurs with. Then we hope to write a grant to do an actual clinical study on the matter.
People have the right to know about product differences that might impact their love lives. And physicians need to know the prevalence of irritation from lubricants, even if it isn’t sexy enough for some big drug company to fund a study.
Please help us in this “guerilla” approach to bringing some real life science to this topic. Fill out the survey (it is short), and we will send you a free Pre’ sample in thanks!!
Many Thanks-
Dr. E
PS- Dr. Adriaens’ irritation test used slugs instead of rabbits, and this type of testing is becoming more popular in Europe. Although it is too bad to have to use slugs, it still is a better than the standard “rabbit irritation” test. So the more we can promote the study she did, the more we can teach the medical and scientific community in the US about this alternate irritation test!
