A new study presented at the International Microbicides Conference in Pittsburgh http://microbicides2010.org/files/LubesDezzuttiAbstract.pdf evaluated the safety of several lubricants on different tissues, including uterine and cervical tissues. Investigators evaluated six products including: Astroglide, Elbow Grease, ID Glide, KY Jelly, Wet Platinum and PRÉ (made from the same formula as Pre~Seed). PRÉ alone was isotonic (same salt concentration as the body’s cells), whereas the other water soluble lubricants contained higher amounts of dissolved salts compared to what is normally found in cells. As a result, these products had toxic effects on cells and tissues. “Some of the lubricants caused significant portions of the epithelium — the layer of cells that serves as a protective barrier — to be stripped away” according to Charlene Dezzutti, Ph.D., from the University of Pittsburgh and Magee-Women’s Research Institute, who led the study for the Microbicide Trials Network. PRÉ and Wet Platinum were the safest lubricants in the studies, while Astroglide was the most toxic to cells, and KY Jelly had the worst effect on the good bacteria, essentially wiping them out. PRÉ was the only water-based lubricant that was isotonic and did not disrupt the tissues.

Dr. E

Dear Pre Seed,

I have meant to write this letter for over a year now. So, here is our story…

My wife and I tried to conceive for seven (yes seven!) years and spent over $35,000.00 at a fertility clinic, with no results. A very sad and emotionally draining experience to say the least. We just accepted that we may never be able to conceive our own children so we then decided to adopt a baby girl from China. We went through all of the classes, meetings, paperwork, background checks, and paid out lots more money so we could realize our dream of being parents. We were finally given a ”log in date” of December of 2006. We were originally told it should only take 12 to 14 months from that date until we get pick up our daughter in China. As of today’s date 8/18/09 we have still heard nothing from China…

One evening almost two years ago I was watching television and a news anchor mentioned how some people were successfully conceiving using some sort of kit. I went upstairs, logged on to the Internet and began my research. I guess we just assumed that the doctors were giving all the credible methods we could use. I soon came across your wonderful product as well as the book “Taking Charge of Your Fertility”. I immediately ordered the book and read it in three days (Yes my wife thought I was a bit nuts). I then ordered Pre Seed and we began charting. Honestly, we were happy to have found another method that was very low stress, natural, and relatively inexpensive, but I don’t think we truly believed it would work.

Well, it did work, and it worked after only three months of trying. I will NEVER forget coming home to my wife waiting at the door with a little plastic thing that said “Pregnant”! Nothing had even said this once in seven years, and there it was. She started crying and I did too. Then, because we are both over forty, we decided to not get too excited because we are very aware of the risks. We couldn’t help it though. Something actually said PREGNANT! We were overjoyed.

The delivery of our son went as close to perfectly as one could hope. It went so quickly there wasn’t enough time left to administer any pain killers for my wife! Yeah, she’s a tough cookie. Our son just turned one year old on July 28th 2009, and he is the joy of our lives. I have told so many people about what worked for us…

Thank you so much for your incredible product. My wife and I truly believe it was a combination of Pre Seed, The Book, and being able to relax about the attempts that worked. If you should ever want to contact me or ask any further questions, email me and I would be happy to give you my contact information.

Gratefully yours,

Frank, Jane and Frankie G

134 people completed over 30 detailed questions in a self-reporting, opt-in internet, survey. Women were recruited through social media and chat room sites. Data are not a clinical study or necessarily reflective of the broader population. An emphasis of this survey was learning more about women who used Pre~Seed specifically because of poor quality cervical fluids/mucus.

Trying-to-conceive women, in our survey, used Pre~Seed because of inadequate vaginal secretions, including cervical fluids, based on the following personal needs:

44% to relieve dryness and discomfort during intercourse

35% to supplement low quality cervical fluid

52% to supplement too little quantity of cervical fluid

A total of 87 women used Pre~Seed for poor quality cervical fluids with 81% of these women saying it increased their cervical fluid quality; and 64% saying it improved their cervical fluid quantity.

58% of women who took this survey, became pregnant while using Pre~Seed

Of women with poor quality cervical fluid, 57% became pregnant while using Pre-Seed

75% of women used Pre~Seed twice or more during their fertile time

30% of users became pregnant the first time they used Pre~Seed

15% the second time and 10% after 4 or more cycles

93% of users applied Pre~Seed inside the vagina

57% of users had been trying to conceive for 7 or more months before using Pre~Seed

40% of babies were a boy

38% of babies were a girl

20% of first pregnancies were lost (consistent with the 25-38% of all first trimester pregnancies lost in the general population)

There were no multiple pregnancies in this group of survey responders

These results support the value of Pre~Seed to relieve dryness and supplement vaginal secretions involved in reproduction, including cervical fluids.

This is the third survey we have done in the past 7 years showing no gender differences in pregnancy outcomes for women using Pre~Seed.

Almost 1/3 of users became pregnant the first time they used Pre~Seed , even though a majority of users had been trying to conceive for more than half a year prior to using it.

Declining fertility with age is not just a female issue. We all know about the increased risks of infertility or birth defects in older women who want to have a child, and are aware that these risks are due to chromosome changes in the egg that occur as women age.

However, as with most things reproductive, the medical community has lagged far behind in evaluating the effect of aging in men on sperm quality. Several recent studies have begun to paint a picture of aging of the male reproductive tract which is very similar to that seen in women.

Specifically, in a study of 2,000 couples (Hassan & Killick, Fertility & Sterility; June, 2003) men that were over 45 years of age had a five-fold increase in time to pregnancy for their partners (how long it took them to become pregnant) as compared to younger men. This effect was seen even after taking into account the variables of their wife’s age, how often they had intercourse and whether or not they had fertility adverse life styles (smoking, drinking etc..). Even older men who had very young wives (<25 yrs of age) had a four-fold increase in time to pregnancy.

In this study, 57% of these 2,000 unselected couples became pregnant within 3 months of trying to conceive, and 81% after 1 year. The average time to pregnancy increased from 7 months in men that were 25 years of age or younger, to 37 months in men that were over 45 years of age.

Other work suggests that similar to the changes seen in women, these delays in fertility may be due to DNA or chromosomal abnormalities in the sperm of older men. Singh et al (Fertility & Sterility, Dec 2003) found that the DNA of sperm in men ages 36-57 had far more breakage in the strands than did sperm from men ages 20-35. These strand breaks have been associated with infertility, early embryo losses, miscarriages and even birth defects or cancer in children.

Another study (Sloter et al., Fertility & Sterility April, 2004) also showed age related increases in the number of sperm with broken or damaged DNA for men, especially sperm with structural chromosomal abnormalities. This study suggested that these changes may be due to environmental toxin damage, or a loss of internal antioxidants in semen in aging individuals.

What can be done to help the chances of conceiving for older men?

Be sure and have a sperm chromatin assay done in addition to a normal semen analysis (visit http://www.scsadiagnostics.com/ to learn more), so that you know if sperm DNA damage is present. I highly recommend this test for older men, especially because many older “dads-to-be” are on medications which may cause DNA strand breaks (e.g. antidepressants, cholesterol lowering drugs etc…).

When providing a semen sample for testing or for clinical procedures, use Pre~Seed as a sperm-friendly lubricant to help make semen sample collection more pleasant. This is important because the more enjoyable ejaculation is, the more normal sperm a man can produce for these samples!

There is also a growing body of evidence that vitamins with antioxidants help men with low fertility. Numerous studies have found that infertile men do not make enough of their own antioxidants in their semen to protect sperm on their journey at ejaculation and through the cervix. INGfertility did a study on FertilAid vitamins and found that this antioxidant containing fertility vitamin increased total motile sperm counts for some men. I do recommend that all TTC men take a fertility vitamins while TTC.

Make sure you have intercourse timed with ovulation to optimize the chances of sperm and egg meeting. Ovulation prediction tests, as well as tracking cervical mucus quality are effective ways to know when to get busy “baby-making”. Having intercourse every other day during your fertile window, up to your first day of “dry” (or less) cervical mucus, will make sure you cover the bases.

Vaginal dryness and a lack of secretions during your fertile window makes intercourse uncomfortable and can interfere with fertility. Supplementing your secretions with Pre~Seed makes “baby-making” more fun. Better feeling intercourse can increase sperm production! So take that time for at least one session during your fertile window to have “Gourmet Sex”—the long, relaxed, “we love each other” kind!

Blessings~ Dr. E

Our most recent opt-in Pre~Seed User survey has some awesome data and responses!! In particular, we were looking at women’s observations of cervical mucus quality and pregnancy outcomes while using Pre~Seed. We should have some very interesting results to share with you all next week.

A couple of users’ comments literally brought tears to my eyes! Of course not everyone became pregnant using Pre~Seed, although 58% of responders did. And the babies were 40% boys and 38% girls. This is our third survey by users in the past seven years, and every time baby gender is evenly split.

The most amazing story was one woman who had had 3 IUIs and 5 IVFs FAIL, before becoming pregnant while using Pre~Seed as a lubricant. Another woman was trying for 5 years with 2 IVFs and became pregnant through intercourse with Pre~Seed. Truly a blessing to read these amazing stories! I am honored that you all took the time to fill out this very long survey!

Thank you again ~

A new study by Millheiser et al., (Fertility & Sterility, 2010) reported that 40% of women undergoing infertility interventions had sexual function scores that made them at risk for poor quality intimate relationships or “sexual dysfunction”. This was true for only 25% of the control group. The study found that TTC women actually had lower frequency of intercourse and lower satisfaction with their sex lives. Thirty-four percent of women reported a decline in their sex life satisfaction while TTC.

The findings in this study are consistent with studies I did eight years ago. Specifically, when we found that 75% of women experience increased levels of vaginal dryness and discomfort during intercourse when trying to conceive. Even though we all know, we sometimes forget to do little things to keep love-making fun, especially when baby-making. Make sure that at least once when you are ovulating, you have full on “Gourmet Sex”, with back rubs, foreplay and Pre-Seed to make it slippery fun! More stimulating intimacy can help his sperm counts be higher, and female orgasm offers important physiologic benefits to sperm on their journey as well.

My biggest advice for intimacy is don’t wait until 11 pm or later- make an early relaxed night of it! It is easy to wait until late at night, trying to get “one more thing” done, and then both are too tired to care. Also, there is really limited value in every day intercourse, unless you WANT to do this. Most couples would be better off just making sure they have intercourse every two to three days throughout the cycle, versus putting too much pressure on themselves and experiencing burn out!

In short, create that fun loving-making “Gourmet sex” at least once a month DURING ovulation when trying to conceive. It is better for you and better for making a baby!
